"Well, well, well! What have we here? A monster on the loose? My, my, my- We can't have that." -Click(Page 266)

Click is an antagonist first introduced in Chapter 11 ("Ensemble") of The Property of Hate. He is an agent of Hate, sent to the Black Market to retrieve and/or kill RGB , and possibly retrieve Hero . It is interesting to note that he fires bullets made of _______, a sort of "anti-stuff".[2] He barely survived complete destruction in the Sea by leaving one eye behind in the market.[3]

Personality[]

Little was known about Click's personality at this time, though he has been described as a "real hotshot"[4] by Dial, and "an ass"[5] by Modmad. He is often ruled by his temper, which can literally "blow his top" from pent-up rage. He also appears to have the habit of repeating words three times for emphasis,[6] and generally seems to have a flair for the dramatic, and does not directly attack RGB or Hero without some sort of speech or act of intimidation following it. The one time he does shoot RGB without question, it is not fatally, and he then resumes his act while his target is incapacitated.

It is also seen as an implication in Chapter 26: Casting that he tends to be obsessive, and will fixate on people or things an unhealthy amount. He crushes his own Temper beneath his foot[7], an act symbolic for his rage and his disregard for other living things if he does not have a reason to care about them; RGB doesn't know what happened to Click but it's likely that Click was killed when his Temper turned into a Grief and attacked him. RGB described him as being on the path of destruction in every sense of the word, implying that Click was already violent and potentially sociopathic as a Hero.

Appearance[]

In-Comic[]

Click takes the form of a wind-up tin soldier with a blank, smiling face, the head of which can serve as a cannon. His arms can be reworked into multiple configurations, the two most notable being "arm" and "gun" and can also extend an alarming degree, allowing Click to "walk" at a very great height.[8] His hands, when not in use, rest on his shoulders and function as epaulets.[9] The is no official description as to how this configuration works and changes, and Modmad has admitted it doesn't strictly make sense, but it appears as though the barrel "sections" will "shift" along the arm as needed.[10] The front of his uniform disguises three mouths, all of which can speak simultaneously.[11] The sets of gold buttons alongside these mouths are also his true eyes.[12][13] One of these eyes was torn off of his uniform and shot into the rafters, making it the current only remaining piece of him after the rest was dissolved.[14] As a wind-up toy, he emits a clicking noise from the turning of his key.

Click's speech bubble is rectangular, pale blue, and may have up to three tails depending on how many mouths are speaking. Additionally, extra pale blue lines may surround this box. His voice is stated to sound sharp, metallic, and "echoey," like how a tin man should sound.[15] He uses the font "Trebuchet", as a meta joke.[16]

Humanclick

Human[]

Before his venture into The World of Make Believe, Click was a human man with pale skin and shaved blond hair. According to ModMad, he "he bleached his hair in a fit of impulsive action and now he has to live with it"[17]. He worked as a police officer in England. He had a hobby of creating miniature soldiers and other war-related items, such as tanks. It is implied by the medals on his wall, that he used to be, or knew someone who was, in the military[18]. During his time in the The World of Make Believe as a hero, Click wears a red soldier's uniform similar to the miniature soldiers he painted as a human with black and red boots and his right arm being partially mechanical with two metallic tubes jutting out of his elbow.

Story[]

Click's story prior to the beginning of the comic is primarily shown in Chapter 26: Casting. Before becoming a Hero for RGB, Click worked in law enforcement in London. He had an infatuation with the royal guards, and strived to be something important, something relevant. RGB watched him for some time to determine how suitable of a Hero Click would make, and yet even with this care RGB overlooked Click's obsessive tendencies, his more violent and militaristic outlook, and accidentally focused solely on the dedication and yearning that Click showed.[19]

In the World of Make Believe, when Click finally showed his true colours, he was stranded by RGB who ran out of fear and shame. Click had crushed a Temper, not pausing to fix it and instead grasping one of its shards to use as a weapon. But at this neglect that Temper grew and changed, becoming a Grief that reached out, and is implied to have killed Click and any semblance of humanity he had left, officially turning him into a monster of the realm.[20]

We know from later events that Click considered this as a murder, as he states that RGB has, in some manner, "...murdered 'Me'".[21] This is the first time that it is implied that Click had once been a Hero[22].

Click was sent to either kill or apprehend RGB in the Market, but seemed very set on the former. He walked past a hidden RGB and Hero as they entered the Market, and later gave chase as they tried to leave. RGB, cornered, riled Click to the point of practically exploding, and used the chance to pull off a crafty escape. When Click next found RGB, he shot him immediately through the shoulder, attracting the attention of the Market's denizens. His delay to question Hero as to why she would protect her guide causes him to be found by the Market Guardians, who allow RGB to be put on "trial", but do not allow Click to be the one to pass judgement. Hero is chosen to choose RGB's fate, as "the one who has been wronged most recently," and Click passes her his gun and goads her into killing him. When she refuses, throwing the gun into the sea, he becomes furious and tries to destroy them both. He is stopped by Magnus , who, among the rest of the crowd, has joined in together to pull back a long rope like a slingshot. When they let go, it catches Click and throws him into the sea wall, which dissolves him while he vows revenge on our protagonists.

When Hero and RGB leave the Market, the eye in the rafters is shown to still be alive. It dislodges itself from the wood and clatters onto a seller's table.[3] The eye is picked up by Ratfink, seen by the creature at first as a stroke of luck, but Click uses it to attempt to take control and open a splitting mouth across the bird's chest.[23] Several chapters later, he's ordered Ratfink to retrieve pieces of his body and eat them, claiming that doing so will allow both individuals to regain their seperate forms. After this, he sets his sight on the Market with full intent to flood the place.

Trivia[]

  • Click's uniform is actually subtly different in design in Chapter 13 than in his introduction in Chapter 11, featuring two differently colored hats and a slightly different jacket design. This was not intentional.[24]
  • The first in-comic mention of his name was by Dial on page 246[25], but was actually first named in the update following his first appearance[26] in the tumblr tags of Modmad.
  • RGB at one point refers to Click as "My poor steadfast tin soldier."[27] The Steadfast Tin Soldier was a story by Hans Christian Anderson. This could also have been a stealthy foreshadowing to Click's demise, although Click was thrown into and destroyed by water rather than fire. However, considering that Griefs are implied to have ties to fire, this might actually refer to Click's death at the hands of his own Temper, having turned into a Grief.
  • Click's last line of dialogue before being dissolved, "I'll get you, my pretty... And your little dog, too," is a direct reference to the iconic line in The Wizard of Oz, spoken by the Wicked Witch of the West, who, possibly not coincidentally, was also killed by water.
  • The same scene was also apparently based on a nightmare ModMad had once had.[28]
  • There may have been a post on Mod's blog somewhere stating that Click was once made of musical instruments, but this design was instead given to Melody and replaced with a design more fitting of a tin soldier.[29]
  • Click is the only character, aside from "Negative" RGB (introduced in namesake Chapter 6), to have a chapter named after him, "Click" being the title of Chapter 14.
  • Click had a little brother (that he once pushed into a puddle of mud). He was dumped by an at the time girlfriend of his because she witnessed it.[30]
  • He hated broccoli when he was alive.[30]
  • Click's represents hate in that he has a violent, aggressive hatred of others and the desire for revenge. Click's main colour is red, which is often associated with passion, rage and violence with his personality following suit. His desire to be a soldier and his obsession with the military and war back when he was human also fits into his role, wanting to become a soldier for the sake of violence while completely missing the point of why soldiers fight to begin with.
